William Black, Methodist clergyman (b at Huddersfield, Eng 10 Nov 1760; d at Halifax 8 Sept 1834). Black settled near Amherst, Nova Scotia, with his family in 1775. In 1779 he became a Methodist and began preaching throughout present-day NS and NB, stressing the Methodist creed of the sinfulness of man and the need for regeneration through faith.
By 1784 he had communicated with Methodist leaders in the US, who sent missionaries to help him. In 1789 Black was appointed bishop and superintendent for the Maritimes and Newfoundland, a position he held until he retired in 1812. He is considered the founder of Methodism in the Maritimes. When he died, the church numbered some 6000.
